Mistakes can happen anytime, and when you’re rushing, they occur more frequently. Making mistaken payments is more common than it seems; the problem is with canceling those transactions.
In Venmo, from the moment a payment is sent, the money will be available to the recipient; therefore, it is difficult to reverse the transaction thanks to the bank alone. The most viable option is to request a refund of the money, but this is not always an option.
Canceling Venmo payment
Although it is not always possible, there’s a method that could work with a lot of luck. Through the “recover” option, you can cancel Venmo payments. To complete this, you must log in to your account on the mobile app.
Press the three dots in the top right corner of the page to open the drop-down menu and tap on “incomplete payments” among the options. Here are all the pending payments you have sent.
When you enter the “incomplete” option, you will see two tabs; one indicates “requests” and the other “payments” for this situation, you have to tap on “payments.” You should see the last payment you sent with the recipient’s phone number or email address.
Furthermore, the amount and the message you sent appear, underneath there are two options, you have to press “withdraw,” and you will notice how the payment will turn gray, and a new message “canceled this request” will appear.
Once you return to the application menu, the payment will be gone, and you will not lose the funds sent by mistake from your account. This process is effective if you notice that the payment displays an error.
You must send a request to Venmo to cancel the payment
When the payment is already processed, it is impossible to carry out the above process; when you send money to the wrong person and cannot request a refund, you need to ask Venmo.
The direct request is also made through the mobile application; you have to open it and tap the “pay or request” option at the bottom of the main page. Now type the name of the person who received the accidental payment and enter the amount you sent.
The application suggests adding a note explaining the situation and how the mistake happened. Now you have to select the option “request” instead of “pay,” and you will see a green message on the bottom screen confirming the request.
Now accept, and the request is sent. If you do not receive the payment immediately, you can go to the “incomplete” option in the menu you opened earlier, and in the previously sent request, there will be a blue “remember” button.
Press it to send a message to the user, reminding them to return the money. The following procedure will depend on the person who received the money by accident.
Contact Venmo to request the refund
If the days go by and the money is not returned, you should contact Venmo customer service directly to evaluate the appropriate solutions to solve the problem. But you must be clear that this does not guarantee you will receive the money back.
To contact them, you can go to the application and log in with your account; now, look for the menu and select “get help.” On the new page are the “contact us,” “send us an email,” or “chat with us” buttons.
Choose the most suitable for you; you can also select the option “check our schedule” to find the phone number to call customer service. Before starting the procedure, you must have all the payment information for the wrongful transaction because the agents will request it.
How to avoid having to cancel a Venmo payment?
Understandably, mistakes happen from time to time due to failures when selecting or copying the recipient’s data. However, before you start making a transfer, be sure to double-check the data to make sure you are sending the right amount to the correct person.
That way, you save yourself a lot of stress and worry. Venmo is not responsible for wrongful payments, even less so if the user who received it is unwilling to return it.
