It is also called Tri Sigma and is a women sorority that was founded in 1898 at State Female Normal School (now Longwood University) in Farmville, Virginia, and its headquarters is located in Woodstock, Virginia. Sigma Sigma
Tri Sigma’s mission is to establish a perpetual bond of friendship among its members, develop a strong womanly character in its members, and impress upon them high standards of conduct. Its vision is to provide exceptional experiences to women so as to empower them to change the world. Tri Sigma values are wisdom, faith, hope, power and love.
Its official symbol is a sailboat that was adopted at the 1974 Convention. Royal Purple and white are the official colours of the organisation that were adopted in the 1902 Constitution. Sorority’s jewel is the pearl, and its official flower is purple violet. The Coat of Arms was adopted in the year 1902 and was designed by Harriet Hankins, Alpha. The equilateral triangle badge of the sorority was adopted in 1903 and is worn only by initiated members of Tri Sigma. The new members wear a pin until initiation.
Requirements to Join
A fresher in order to become a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma must meet GPA requirements. The minimum grade points required to join Tri Sigma is 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
For a woman to become a member of Alumna initiate must have an interest in Tri Sigma and its mission and vision. She should also recognise the value of its membership. The candidate should not be a member of the National Panhellenic Conference sorority but can be a local, service or honorary sorority member. The alumnae initiate should contribute her own unique talents and take an interest in alumnae chapter activities. Two members of Tri Sigma must endorse the potential member as a sponsor throughout the new member period. An agreement by the alumnae chapter or collegiate chapter that will initiate the candidate. The potential member should be ineligible for collegiate membership.
How To Join
Sigma Sigma Sigma encourages its potential new members to reach out to the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life or Office of Student Life on their respective campus to learn about the registration process for sorority recruitment. The headquarters staff of Sigma Sigma Sigma works directly with National Panhellenic Conference and its campus partners to determine the recruitment process on each of its campuses.
Moreover, anyone, including non-members, can introduce a Potential New Member to a collegiate chapter through the Potential New Member Introduction form. The introduction helps Tri Sigma chapters to learn more about potential new members and their interests, passions and pursuits before the recruitment process begins.
A woman can also be invited to join Sigma Sigma Sigma under the Alumna initiate program. Through the Alumna initiate program, an invitation can be extended to women of various ages and situations. The responsibilities, rights, and privileges of a member-initiated as an alumna are the same as that of a member-initiated as a collegian.
How Much It Costs To Join
Tri Sigma members have a financial obligation. The fees relating to alumnae initiation membership are as follows.
Leading to the initiation
Loyalty fee of $60. This fee includes a Certificate of Membership, the Triangle magazine, the History book of Sigma Sigma Sigma, full payment to the Loyalty Fund.
After Initiation
After a member is initiated, they are expected to pay Alumnae dues.
The Alumnae dues are as follows:
Annual Dues $45
Triennial Dues $130
Lifetime Dues $1050
Lifetime Dues can be paid in full or in installments. The installments of $87.50 are to be paid twice a year for six years.
