Alpha Delta Pi is also called ADPi. Its headquarters is in Atlanta, Georgia. This women’s sorority is a member of the National Panhellenic Conference.
It was first founded as an Adelphean society by Eugenia Tucker Fitzgerald and five of her friends. It is the first secret society for women. In 1905, its name was changed from Adelphean Society to Alpha Delta Phi. The name of Alpha Delta Phi was officially changed to Alpha Delta Pi in 1913.
Alpha Delta Pi is committed to sisterhood, high academic standards, values and ethics and social responsibility. It is established on the principles of leadership, sisterhood, scholarship and service. Their vision is that Alpha Delta Pi is a way of life.
The official colors of Alpha Delta Pi are azure blue and white, where azure blue stands for friendship, and white stands for truth. The official flower is woodland violet. Since woodland violets are unavailable for purchase thus African violet are used as substitutes. The official mascot of Alpha Delta Pi is “Alphie” the Lion, its symbol is diamond, and the sorority’s motto is “We Live For Each Other.” Its philanthropy is Ronald McDonald House Charities. Alpha Delta Pi’s official magazine is The Adelphean.
Elizabeth Moseley Coles designed its Coat of Arms. The credit for the actual design of Coat of Arms is given to another sister of the Alpha chapter named Agnes Chapman. The Alpha pin and symbolism from the ritual were combined in the coat of arms, and the design of the coat of arms originally had a background of violets. The present design was accepted in 1919.
The Adelpheans first wore the first diamond-shaped badge in the year 1851. The stars were not included in the design of the first badge but had a monogram. The stars were added in 1854. The stars and clasped hands were raised in 1874.
At Alpha Delta Pi’s first convention held in 1906, Nanaline King presented a new design, a small gold badge with a black enamel center picturing the clasped hands, the Greek letters, Alpha Delta Phi and the two stars. The convention adopted the design and is still in use only with a slight change: the Greek letter Phi was changed to Pi at the convention held in 1913. New members wear the new member badge before initiation.

How To Join
Alpha Delta Pi can be joined through a formal recruitment process. Through the formal recruitment process, sorority members and potential new members meet each other and get better acquainted. Recruitment through a formal process happens only once a year. It is a mutual selection process and gives the potential new members an opportunity to meet the sorority members. Potential new members are also selected through continuous informal recruitment. Informal recruitment is held on some of the campuses throughout the year.
An alumna can also recommend a potential new member or a legacy through the “Potential New Member” recommendation form.
Women are advised to contact the National Panhellenic office or the sorority office for more information about the recruitment process.
