This Latino-based fraternity was founded on the campus of California Polytechnic State University in the year 1988. Nu Alpha Kappa encompasses and values all cultures. It has chapters across California, Nevada and Colorado. Nu Alpha Kappa is also known as NAK. It was a founding member of the National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations (NALFO). It is currently a member of the North American Interfraternity Conference.
The fraternity was formed on a commitment to “carnalismo”, or brotherhood, to retain and promote culture and search for knowledge. Though fifteen friends established the foundation of the Nu Alpha Kappa fraternity, eleven of the friends became founding fathers.
Founders chose the Greek letters NAK to pronounce the sound of NAC in “Xinaco“. The Nahuatl word “Xinaco” describes an educated and amiable individual whose charisma and personality transcends and enlightens all cultures and social classes.
The official colors of Nu Alpha Kappa are red, white and bronze. Its mascot is XiNAKo. The fraternity’s motto is “Men of Mind, Men of Culture, Men of Pride”. Nu Alpha Kappa’s primary goals are academic excellence, brotherhood, and cultural awareness, and it continuously strives to make the fraternal experience a positive and safe one.
NAKfest is the annual family reunion of the brotherhood. At this fest, the alumni and undergraduates reconnect with old friends. This is the signature event of the fraternity.
The Pledgefest started in 1995. It allows Little Brothers to meet the undergraduate and alumni brothers from different chapters and allows the existing brotherhood share their experiences as Little Brothers. In addition, team-building activities and training sessions are organized during Pledgefest to help Little Brothers develop leadership and organizational skills.
