Sigma Theta Tau was founded in 1922 by six nurses at Indiana University School of Nursing (formerly known as the Indiana University Training School for Nurses). The sorority’s name is derived from a combination of three Greek words: “storgé, timé, and thárros” which mean: “love, honor, and courage”. In 1985, Sigma officially became incorporated as a nonprofit organization in the United States.

How can you join Sigma Theta Tau?
Joining as a Student
A student can become a member of Sigma Theta Tau only through invitation. The students enrolled in a nursing program and who meet the following criteria are invited to join through one of the Sigma chapters.
The criteria are as follows:
- For Undergraduate Students
- Completion of half of the nursing course.
- Must have achieved academic excellence (a GPA of 3.0 or more).
- A rank in highest thirty-five per cent of graduating class in scholarship.
- Academic integrity.
- Registered Nurse Students
- Must have completed twelve credit hours at the current school.
- Must have completed half the nursing course.
- Must have achieved academic excellence (GPA of 3.0 or more).
- A rank in highest thirty-five per cent of graduating class in scholarship.
- Academic integrity.
- Graduate Students (Masters and Doctorate)
- Have completed one-quarter of the nursing curriculum.
- Must have achieved academic excellence (GPA of 3.0 or more).
- Academic integrity.
Joining as a Nurse Leader
The nurses who are not previously inducted as nursing students and are not currently enrolled in a nursing program can join as a nurse leader using the following criteria:
- Have legal recognition to practice nursing in their country.
- Have at least a baccalaureate degree or equivalent in any field.
- Show achievement in nursing.
What are the steps to join Sigma Theta Tau?
All those who meet the criteria mentioned above can join as follows:
- Submit membership intent form online.
- The interested students can submit their resumes and fill membership intent online forms.
- The faculty counsellors then verify if the applicant is eligible for membership.
- Eligible candidates receive an email from Sigma Theta Tau containing instructions on how to complete the membership application.
- Applicants complete the online membership application form.
- New inductees are recognized through induction ceremony.
- New members are welcomed.
What is the cost to join Sigma Theta Tau?
There is an annual chapter membership fee to become a member of Sigma which is determined by each individual chapter’s board of directors.
Usually, the fees to join Sigma Theta Tau are around $30, on top of this, there is another additional international member fee for members who want to enjoy international membership benefits:
- For residents of high-income countries – $69.50
- For residents of middle-income countries – $26.00
- For residents of low-income countries – $13.00
