It’s usual to look for jobs, so there are those who are interested in summer jobs to boost their budget, or higher paying jobs like those at ESPN (in case you’re a journalist).
Obviously, with a job, it will always be good to know how to resolve a dispute with your boss. But beyond that, there is a question regarding jobs when you apply to the ASVAB. What do you know about it?
If you have already applied to The Armed Forces Qualification (TAFQ) Test and achieved the desired qualification to enlist, with the ASVAB you will know your strengths, skills, and knowledge and thus select the career path that best suits you.
The particularity of this test is that it rates your performance in comparison to other people who took the assessment at the same time as you. And they make a comparison considering rank and gender. So if you have already enlisted in the Marines or the Navy, it is time for you to know what jobs you can do.
Does your ASVAB score determine your job?
Yes, the ASVAB will let you know what your job role will be within the military branch you enlisted in. Each branch has a minimum score and at the same time they have a classification system that encompasses each of the possible jobs within these military branches:
- Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) for jobs for those who enlist in The Marines and the Army
- Navy Enlisted Classification (NEC) in the case of the Navy
- Ratings for the Coast Guard
- The Air Force Specialty Code (AFSC) for Air Force recruits
All are based on codes and while ASVAB plays an important role, your military trainers and other characteristics such as age will also be considered.
In most military branches you must have a score over 31 if you have a High School diploma and 50 if you have a General Educational Development (GED) certificate. Only to join the Coast Guard will you need a minimum score of 40 if you are a high school graduate.
What should I know about the Military Occupational Specialty (MOS)?
This is a system designed to assign you to the job that best matches your skills and ASVAB score. In some cases you may find that certain members are hired before beginning the basic training that all new entrants must complete; however, the specific job will be awarded once you graduate from basic training.
The specific case of the MOS for those wishing to enter the Navy is done through a system of codes. These are classified into 14 general job categories that cover more than 200 professions, including some that can only be exercised within a military branch. Among these 14 categories you will be able to get:
- Combat specialty careers in the military
- Electronic and electrical equipment Repair military personnel
- Human resource positions in the military
- Unusual military careers: musician, photographer, entomologist, and more
On the other hand, for those who wish to enlist in the Marines, the MOS classifies more than 300 jobs that comprise 80 areas of expertise such as:
- Meteorology and Oceanography
- Military police and corrections
- Electronics maintenance
- Morale welfare and recreation
It is recommended that you also review the requirements you must meet to get the job you want. In addition to having an ASVAB score, some jobs require you to complete your 10 weeks of basic training, for example. You must also complete a specific number of weeks of specialized training.
What Navy jobs can I get with my ASVAB score?
This system changed in 2016 and has been called the NEC for the past few years. It categorizes nearly 100 occupations within 14 employment areas and includes professions such as Navy Aviation Community, Naval Medical Personnel, and Special Operations Community.

However, in this military corps, all recruits are placed in a basic job before the training they are required to complete as a rule. Once they choose a position or are assigned one according to their ASVAB weighting, they will be given their NEC, which will change according to their level of experience.
The Navy Enlisted Classification is similar to the Coast Guard Rating classification system, therefore, it changes according to the degree of classification. The difference is that it groups 20 occupations into four major groups such as Aviation Group, Deck, and Weapons Group, and Engineering and Hull Group.
What should I know about The Air Force Specialty Code (AFSC)?
If you want a specific job in the Air Force, you need to score above 31 or 50, as appropriate, in the expertise you would like to pursue.
The AFSC system identifies each career through a coding system for the classification of 123 specialties. This code is composed of alphanumeric characters, each of which has a function:
- The first number in the code represents the career group, i.e., the most general area
- The next character identifies the career field, the field of work
- The third character is the subdivision of the career field
- The fourth character represents the degree of competence of the individual
You should know that on the official website of The Air Force, you will find the career slider tool, which will guide you to some careers you might qualify for based on your ASVAB score.

If you got an M47, you will qualify for aircraft fuel systems and if you got an M56, you will be able to work with Aerospace Propulsion. Remember, this is just a reference.
A good grade will ensure you the career path you dream of
You already know that your score in the different competencies evaluated by the ASVAB will influence the job you will be assigned, that is why you must prepare yourself in advance to reach your goal. Remember that when entering any military corps, discipline must be your best friend and that should start before you take this test.
If you got the grade you wanted, celebrate! After completing basic training, you will have the opportunity to specialize through advanced training.
Not satisfied with your performance? You can apply several times to the ASVAB, but you must wait a specific time to repeat the test and keep in mind that the last score you obtained is considered, not the highest one.
