Three cadets established Sigma Nu at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia, in 1869. It is an undergraduate college fraternity whose founders are James Frank Hopkins, Greenfield Quarles, and James McIlvaine Riley. Physical abuse and hazing of underclassmen by upperclassmen led the founders to form the “Legion of Honor.”

Sigma Nu fraternity’s official philanthropic and service effort is the Helping Hand Initiative. The two primary components of the Helping Hand Initiative are The Founders’ Month-of-Service and the Helping Hand Partners. Fifth Point Properties, LLC, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sigma Nu fraternity, and its goal is to improve the quality of chapter housing available to fraternity’s chapters.

Requirements To Join
A person interested in joining Sigma Nu is required to have a high school Grade Point Average of 2.5-3.0 on a scale of 4.0.
How To Join
There are multiple ways to join Sigma Nu. A person interested in joining the fraternity can participate in the formal recruitment process or participate in a recruitment event like a rush or a social event.
A person can also contact the recruitment officer or reach out to a member or alumnus of Sigma Nu. They can also fill out a prospective member form online.
Sigma Nu has a value-based recruitment program under which it recruits men on the basis of the values of the fraternity. The recruitment chairman and the chapters also contact prospective members.
An existing member or alumni can also refer a prospective new member by filling the membership referral form.
How Much does it Cost to Join?
There are two types of dues: paid to the national organization and the other paid to the local chapter. The national dues are a one-time initiation fee of $220 and a one-time candidate fee of $90.
The fees paid to the national office is approximately $150 to $175 per academic semester.
Local chapter dues are decided by the members of the chapter when they write the constitution and by-laws. Chapter dues vary from campus to campus.
