It is the second oldest sorority in the United States and was established in the year 1852 at Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia. It is headquartered in Peachtree City, Georgia.
Phi Mu provides social opportunities, personal and academic development, support network, commitment to excellence, service to others, lifelong friendship and personal enrichment resources to women who join their sisterhood. It encourages members to achieve their personal best.
The official flower is the rose-colored enchantress carnation. The official colors of Phi Mu are rose (pink) and white. The mascot of Phi Mu is a lion named Sir Fidel. The badge of Phi Mu is a unique barbed quatrefoil shield of gold, and it is overlaid with a black shield that bears two bonds, three stars, a hand that clasps a heart and the Greek letters “Phi Mu”. The new members wear a Phi pin, a black and gold shield with the Greek letter “Phi”. The open motto of Phi Mu is Les Soeurs Fideles which means “the faithful sisters”.
The coat of arms of Phi Mu consists of a red shield that is supported by two lions named Sir Fidel. The shield also includes the badge of Phi Mu, and above the shield is the crest that is a lighted lamp of knowledge in gold and under the shield is the motto of Phi Mu. The creed of Phi Mu is the uniting statement that defines what it is to be a noblewoman and provides the basis for the Phi Mu member experience. Its national philanthropy is Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
Requirements to Join
To join Phi Mu, women need to meet the following criteria:
- A woman is eligible to join if she is currently enrolled in a college where there is a collegiate chapter.
- She is not an initiated member of an existing National Panhellenic Conference organization and has never been a member of a National Panhellenic Conference organization.
A letter of recommendation or an alumna reference letter is not required to become eligible for membership.
How to Join
Women interested in joining Phi Mu can contact the Greek life office on their campus or contact Phi Mu at [email protected]. Women can also join through Alumnae Initiation Program.
The women who could not join Phi Mu during their college years can become members of the sorority through the Alumnae Initiation process. Under this process, a Phi Mu member in good standing can invite the woman to join.
Information about the women candidate and her Phi Mu sponsor should be submitted in the online Alumnae Initiation Application form.

The costs to join Phi Mu vary from chapter to chapter, and you should contact the chapter office on your campus for detailed information about membership fees and dues. The membership fees include new member fees, chapter fees, house fee, meals and other expenses.

Phi Mu Foundation is committed to the academic development of its members and awards merit and need-based scholarships to its members.
For a Phi Mu member to be eligible for a scholarship, she must meet the minimum requirement, which is a Grade Point Average of 3.0.
