Kappa Alpha Theta was founded in the year 1870 at Indiana Asbury in Green Castle, Indiana. It is the first Greek-letter fraternity for women and also the first fraternity for women to establish a chapter in Canada.
The organisation’s vision is to lead every member to personal excellence through lifelong sisterhood. Kappa Alpha Theta’s mission is to nurture each member throughout her lifetime and offer its members opportunities for intellectual and personal growth. The organisation is committed to fighting inequality, discrimination and racism and continuously makes efforts to make the organisation inclusive and diverse. The organisation values scholarship, leadership, service, personal excellence and sisterhood.
The Kappa Alpha Theta comprises of Fraternity, Theta Foundation, Fraternity Housing Corporation.
The colors of Kappa Alpha Theta are black and gold. Its flower is black and gold pansy. The official symbol of Kappa Alpha Theta is a kite and twin stars. The kite-shaped pin is the symbol of membership.
The programs and experiences offered at Kappa Alpha Theta are designed to support sisterhood, lifelong learning, leadership, service and personal excellence.
Requirements to Join
Kappa Alpha Theta has a mission to give women lifelong opportunities for intellectual and personal growth. As per the laws of Fraternity, any college women, irrespective of national origin, race, religion, disability, age or other characteristics protected by applicable laws, can become a member of Kappa Alpha Theta. The eligibility criteria to participate in recruitment are:
- If a person is a regularly matriculated student on campus
- If a person has never been an initiated member of any other NPC group.
- If a person has not been a new member of an NPC group on their campus since the last primary recruitment.
New potential members are required to have a high school GPA of 3.00+, and potential members with the academic standing of junior, senior or sophomore are required to have a college GPA of 2.75+. The GPA required varies from chapter to chapter.
How to Join
An individual can join Kappa Alpha Theta through college chapter recruitment. The policies and procedures for joining women’s fraternities and sororities vary from college to college or university to university. So an individual is recommended to contact the Panhellenic, Greek Affairs, or Student Activities office in their respective campuses.
For College Freshmen
Undergraduates receive information about the recruitment before the college starts; if the college you are to attend has fall primary recruitment. You can also contact the university if you do not receive any information.
Value-Based Recruitment
Kappa Alpha Theta supports the Value-Based Recruitment Policy of the National Panhellenic Conference and ensures that every chapter executes it. Recruiting through the value-based process ensures new members have values in line with that of the fraternity’s and are dedicated to their mission and purpose.
Alumna Initiate Process
Through this program, the fraternity offers membership to those exceptional women who were not part of Greek life as college women. As per the laws of the fraternity, the candidate must be women and a college graduate and must have a sponsor (the sponsor is the member who completes the reference).
Moreover, all college chapters have the responsibility and privilege of identifying and recommending qualified potential new members. Any person can submit a recommendation through the Potential New Member recommendation form.
How Much it Costs to join
It varies in amount from college to college.
- New member fees- $1059.50.
- Members residing in House- Fall fees- $3174.75 Spring fees- $2896.50.
- Members residing out of the House- Fall fee- $909.50 Spring fees $771.50.
- Life Loyal program can be joined by paying a one-time fee of $299. Members who were initiated 50+ years ago need to pay $189 to become a Life Loyal member.
The merit and need-based scholarships are awarded for undergraduate and graduate studies.
Grant funds are given to chapters and members to participate in non-degree educational, service learning and leadership development programs.
