American Express is known for consistently offering rewards credit cards in the marketplace. Deciding to deactivate a credit card is not the easiest of processes.
However, if for whatever reason you don’t want to keep your credit card for the long term and are wondering how to cancel your account; we bring you the information you need to do so.
How to close AmEx credit card
Luckily, this process has three ways to be carried out, none of them involving writing a form letter to headquarters, and all of them work quickly, although some are simpler than others.
Make a call to American Express Customer Care
Customer Service can be found on the back of your credit card. You can also call 1 (800) 528-4800. A call to customer service is the fastest and most efficient way to deactivate or cancel a card at American Express.
When you contact the customer service provider, you need to let them know why you want to cancel the credit card. You will be asked for personal information, such as your credit card number and zip code address, to ensure your identity as the cardholder.
Your account will then be closed immediately or within two to three days. You will also be asked to destroy the credit card to avoid inconveniences such as misuse.
Email American Express
Just as with the calling method, in the email, you will have to explain why you want to cancel the card. You will also be asked for information about the credit card, such as the full credit card number and your full name with the zip code.
The address to send this email to American Express customer service can be found on their official website:
American Express
P.O. Box 981535
El Paso, TX 79998-1535
You can cancel it through direct messaging with American Express
Thanks to advanced technologies, American Express has added an online chat feature. To access it, you must log in to your American Express account associated with the credit card.
You will find the chat function at the bottom right of the main screen. Select “chat,” and a window will immediately pop up for you to write to the customer service representative. However, you must first log in to your account.
Next, you must type the word “cancel,” and just above it will appear the option to “cancel card.” Again, you must have the information related to the credit card and personal data to ensure your identity.
How does canceling a credit card at American Express affect my credit score?
This is one of the most frequently asked questions regarding canceling a credit card. While the change in credit score will not be gigantic after the cancellation of the card, the percentage of the score will be temporarily reduced, even if the account is in good standing.
Some people recommend keeping the card with you, even if it is in disuse, either stored in a drawer or in another safe place. This helps avoid a small but present change in your credit score.
It is also important to note that American Express credit cards can be canceled with a pending balance, but you will still have to keep making payments until the amount owed is paid off.
