In the United States, if you drive under the influence of alcohol and other substances, the police can charge you with DUI; this happens when the officer thinks the driver is impaired to continue driving. Personal and commercial drivers have different fines for having a DUI, and their driver’s licenses can also be suspended for a couple of weeks. So the question is: Can you drive for Grubhub with a DUI?
Grubhub, with headquarters in Chicago, is a delivery platform where you can order restaurant takeout and receive it at your door. Nowadays, Grubhub is available in more than 4,000 cities in the U.S. and Canada. As every state has its law, working for Grubhub and possible penalties for a DUI will depend on the state vehicle statute.
Grubhub job application
To apply to Grubhub as a driver, you only need a few requirements that the company has to check. First, you can work on Grubhub only if you’re 19 or older. The good thing is that they don’t require you to have previous delivery experience, so this can be your first. But there are some requirements for the job.
Car or bike
The main work in Grubhub is to deliver orders from one place to another, and the company doesn’t provide the employee with any means of transportation. Suppose you’re applying because you already have a car. Some areas also allow for bike delivery, so if you do not have a car but have a motorcycle and your state allows it, you could apply for the job as a bike rider.
Valid driver’s license and auto insurance for drivers
To be accepted in Grubhub, you must have a driver’s license that is not expired and valid in the United States. It is also important to have auto insurance because the company cannot be responsible for any accident the driver could take part in.
Valid state I.D. or driver’s license for bike riders
If you are a motorcycle rider, you will need a special permit to ride because you sometimes need to circulate on a highway or commercial street. You could also have a valid I.D. for riding a bike on the state commercial streets if you don’t have a license.
Smartphone (iPhone with iOS 11 or later or Android with 5.0 or later)
This item could be one of the most important assets because the employee has to take orders via the app. You will need a smartphone with at least iOS 11 if you use iPhone; in case you have an Android, it has to have a 5.0 op system minimum. Why? It’s because the app requires some validations to be part of the Grubhub team to link the vehicle to the employee’s profile which uses the car’s license plate, brand, and year.
Through the app, the customer can also rate the de driver and know where the driver is with the order.

To be an official part of the Grubhub family, the company has to run research on the driver; here is where the DUI can be a major obstacle in the job applicant’s record. Screening drivers is vital because customers trust these people with their home or workplace addresses, among other sensitive personal information. Hiring a person with a criminal record could undermine the reliability of the driver and the company.
Alcohol and drug-related violations
Any applicant to Grubhub has to display a legal record of drugs or alcohol in the last seven years; any violations can be considered a reason to disqualify the Grubhub job applicant. A DUI record is not as significant as a DWI (driving while intoxicated), but it’s a statement in a criminal record.
Driver’s violations
Here is where a DUI could affect an applicant because one major violation (an accident resulting from drunk driving) and three minor violations (speeding or driving without a license) in the last three years can result in the instant disqualification of a Grubhub applicant.
Criminal charges
The company can instantly reject any job application if the potential driver has serious criminal charges such as theft, property damage, sexual harassment, violent offenses, or felonies.
Advice for application
Although the company may hire a driver with a DUI, it is unlikely to happen. The advice is to maintain your record clean for the job applications. Remember that the background check will last seven years, so it’s important to keep that in mind.
If you receive a DUI during a delivery order from Grubhub, the company has the right to fire you immediately.
